A clean channel is not simply the channel with the fewest visible network names. Prefer the channel area with the least strong competition, then account for width, band, region, and the capabilities of your devices.

Use a repeatable process

  1. Scan from the location where connection quality matters.
  2. Filter to the band used by your access point.
  3. Identify strong neighboring curves and their widths.
  4. Compare WiFiBuddy's region-aware recommendation.
  5. Change the router setting, wait for clients to reconnect, and scan again.

2.4 GHz

2.4 GHz reaches farther but usually has less usable spectrum and more interference. Prefer non-overlapping channel plans allowed in your region. A narrower 20 MHz width is often easier to coexist with in a crowded environment.

5 GHz

5 GHz typically provides more room and higher capacity. Some channels use Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS), which can require an access point to leave a channel when radar activity is detected. Not every client handles every DFS channel equally well.

6 GHz

6 GHz offers clean spectrum where supported, but it requires compatible access points, clients, operating systems, and regional availability. Its shorter practical range may be an advantage in dense environments because distant networks are received more weakly.

Channel width

Wider channels can increase peak throughput but consume more spectrum. In a congested area, a narrower channel can produce more consistent real-world performance. Judge width alongside signal and overlap rather than maximizing it automatically.
